Kütahya, located in the Aegean Region of Türkiye has 578.640 inhabitants, 11.634 km² (4.491 mil²) surface area, and a total of 13 district areas. On October 31st, 2017, we started the next chapter in our City’s history. Kütahya –famous for its production of çini- was designated a UNESCO Creative City in the Crafts and Folk Art field. There are several crafts and arts such as; çini and ceramic making, silversmithing, wheel turning, serigraphy, calligraphy, needlepoint, ragdoll art, embroidery, wood carving, alaturka diamond engraving, and much more in Kütahya.
Within the framework of implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Kütahya has the chance to demonstrate culture’s role as an enabler for becoming a sustainable city. Kütahya has demonstrated that sustainable development can be achieved through culture and arts and has become Türkiye’s first and only internationally accredited Culture and Arts brand city. The goals, objectives, and actions will guide the Creative City of Kütahya to overcome new challenges and celebrate new achievements to become more resilient.
Kütahya is a city with a historical background of more than seven thousand years, and it has been home to numerous civilizations throughout history. Thanks to its deep cultural roots, the tradition of “çini” art in Kütahya has been known around the world, as well. The city has been globally known thanks to the artistic value and material quality of its famous çini and ceramic products. Also, Kütahya has 3 tile masters who are UNESCO Living Human Treasures; Mr. Sıtkı OLÇAR, Mr. Mehmet GÜRSOY, and Mr. Hamza ÜSTÜNKAYA. Two of them are still alive but one of them has passed away. Kütahya is waiting for visitors from Türkiye and abroad to discover its well-known arts, culture, and traditions.
