Al-Ahsa stands out as a historically significant residential area with a civilization dating back more than 5000 B.C. Renowned as the largest palm tree oasis boasting over 2.5 million palm trees, Al-Ahsa’s strategic location served as a crucial link between East and Southeast Asia along the ancient Silk Road. It played a central role in fostering economic, cultural, political, and religious interactions between these regions.
Beyond its abundant resources, Al-Ahsa harbours the world’s largest oil field, Ghawar, contributing to the creation and preservation of an exceptional cultural heritage. This intertwining of human existence with the ancient oasis has given rise to a unique formula that nurtures creativity and culture, encapsulated in the city’s motto.
Al-Ahsa’s rich cultural and heritage assets recognized both historically and, in the present, have earned it membership in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). Residents of Al-Ahsa take great pride in this inclusion, as it aligns with their aspirations for a society centered on local creativity and culture.
Under the banner of “Creative Al-Ahsa,” the local community actively participates in global events organized by the UCCN, leaving a distinctive mark and making significant contributions. This involvement has sparked a heightened emphasis on promoting and preserving local traditional crafts, with a particular focus on transferring knowledge from seasoned artisans to younger generations.
The connection with the UCCN has inspired a growing number of youngsters in Al-Ahsa to engage actively in various cultural and creative events and activities. During these occasions, the UCCN objectives consistently play a role in raising awareness and fostering a deeper appreciation for the city’s cultural heritage.
