The artistic duo Antonello Ghezzi, who was presented in Carrara with the Cosmic Tree in Piazza Duomo, returns to the city from 23 March to 2 June 2024 at mudaC | Carrara arts museum with a site-specific installation for Finding oneself among the stars.
Promoted by the Municipality of Carrara and curated by Cinzia Compalati, the project will be inaugurated on Saturday 23 March at 5.00 pm, in the presence of the Councilor for Culture Gea Dazzi, the artists Nadia Antonello (Cittadella, 1985) and Paolo Ghezzi (Bologna, 1980), who they have been working together since 2009.
The Antonello Ghezzis return for the third time to work in a UNESCO creative city – after Braga in Portugal and Hamamatsu in Japan, now in Carrara – proving themselves to be powerful witnesses of creativity as a means of urban and community regeneration.
Antonello Ghezzi’s intervention at mudaC was born from a reflection on contemporaneity and, in particular, on the increasingly profound distance between the reality of virtual and social platforms with that of the squares in which to meet, shake hands and hug: we are increasingly hyperconnected but in fact disconnected from our interiority and from the deepest meaning of life.
Antonello Ghezzi’s exhibition was brought forward to the city with the Cosmic Tree, a site-specific installation in Piazza Duomo during the Christmas holidays. In that case and on this occasion at mudaC, the duo implemented a conscious use of marble, through a form of circular economy, creating a basic Christmas tree module that can be reinvented every year by a different artist invited to interpret the theme, as happens at the Tate in London, or, here at the museum, using the waste from marble processing to transform the space of artistic action.
The installation Finding yourself among the stars, designed and created specifically for Carrara, will affect the space dedicated to the temporary exhibitions of mudaC. Stripped of their mobile phone, the first obstacle to seeing the other, visitors will find themselves in a lunar space, dotted with marble dunes, which recalls the Carrara quarries on one side, and a planet far from Earth on the other from which it is possible to see each other at the right distance. Binoculars will show two people from afar who appear to be looking at each other. Between them, a strange structure composed of two connected periscopes: one rises from below, from the depths of the earth; the other descends from above, from the infinity of the universe. In an unprecedented game of glances and points of view, created thanks to some images provided by the European Southern Observatory and NASA, we will be able to see the Earth portrayed from far away and the stars of the Milky Way, always capable of moving us. Looking up from the periscope you will finally recognize yourself in the eyes of another person.
We thank Carrara Marble Way srl for the precious technical support.
