New York Times

Every January, The New York Times publishes its long-awaited list of 52 must-visit destinations, ranging from New Zealand to Hawaii, Singapore to Chile, and Switzerland to the Caribbean. Among this year’s surprises, Italy was honored with a place of excellence, with the city of Massa-Carrara earning the 17th spot on the list.

The reason for this unexpected inclusion was described by the U.S. newspaper as the city’s recognition as the home of marble, transformed into authentic masterpieces of art.

Although the real “home of marbles” is Carrara, Massa (formerly known as Massa di Carrara) was praised for its cultural treasures, such as the Ducal Palace and Malaspina Castle.

Both cities, in addition to sharing a province, are steeped in a passion for art, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the Apuan Alps, the same mountains from which the famous marble was quarried.

Here one can admire masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David or explore the marble quarries that have shaped the region’s artistic history. Massa-Carrara’s designation as a 2024 tourist destination underscores its cultural richness and unique connection to art and history.
