Barcelos Embroidery and Weaving Route
The art of embroidery and weaving is a tradition in the municipality of Barcelos, particularly in the parish of Carreira, being the Sieve Embroidery of S. Miguel da Carreira an ancient tradition, with unique features that distinguish it from the other Minho embroideries. But in Barcelos there are also artisans who still weave in traditional looms and embroider in a traditional way preserving the old/original knowledges and techniques. In addition to the sieve embroidery, there are other productions, namely the lovers’ handkerchiefs, the feather rugs and cushions (unique in Portugal), the carpets, terry towelling, among many others.
